Emergency Lighting is used in communal areas and escape paths to provide lighting in the event of a power cut, the lights can either be separate from the main lighting and only activate when there is a loss of power or can be part of the main lighting system and in addition has a battery back up to stay on permanently for up to 3 Hours using just the battery pack.

Emergency lights are often tested at the same time as the Fire Alarm system, they should be given a duration test to make sure the battery pack is strong enough to last the full 3 Hours, this is a important test because in the event of a power failure or fire you need to know the Emergency lights will last long enough to evacuate the building and give the Emergency services enough light to access the building safely.
